NEW POLL: A Majority of Voters Support Permanently Expanding Child Tax Credit as Awareness for the Tax Cut Grows

Today, Fighting Chance for Families released a new poll of likely voters, finding that a majority of Americans support permanently expanding the Child Tax Credit. The report also finds that only 35 percent of voters are unaware of the expanded credit, down from 53 percent in April.

“Just days after the first of the expanded Child Tax Credit checks went out to working families across the nation, our latest polling finds that a majority of Americans are in agreement: it is time to make the Child Tax Credit expansion permanent,” said McKenzie Wilson, Spokeswoman of Fighting Chance for Families. “This is great news for our work to make this tax credit permanent to help families and give a much-needed shot in the arm to local economies.

“Notably, awareness of the Child Tax Credit has increased strongly — a marker of the tireless outreach of advocates, activists, and the White House to make every American aware of this expansive middle class tax cut. The CTC will provide important aid to families in need and offer a welcome boost to our economy. It’s important that families are made aware of the credit and that we all continue to advocate for a permanent expansion,” continued McKenzie Wilson, Spokeswoman of Fighting Chance for Families.

Fighting Chance for Families is a collaboration between Groundwork Collaborative and Data for Progress advocating for the permanent expansion of the Child Tax Credit. In April, Data for Progress found that 53 percent of voters knew little or nothing about the expanded Child Tax Credit. The report released today, which polled voters days after the first round of monthly checks were sent to families on July 15th, finds the number of families unaware of the credit has sharply decreased by 18 points following Democratic outreach efforts.

Recent research from experts has found the Child Tax Credit will provide a massive boost for local economies across the country. From CNBC reporting, University of Maryland economist Melissa Kearney says “the enhanced federal child tax credit program, with monthly payments starting Thursday, is one of the best ways the government can allot its money to spur economic growth and help the nation’s youth.” Per Kearney, economic policy shows that providing this assistance to families helps set children on the path for success well into adulthood, improving their educational and economic outcomes.
