Washington, DC (October 28, 2021) – Today, Fighting Chance for Families spokesperson McKenzie Wilson released the following statement on the news that the Build Back Better reconciliation bill will include a short-term extension of the expanded Child Tax Credit.

“The inclusion of the expanded child tax credit in the Build Back Better deal is great news for children, families, and the economy. While we had hoped for a longer-term extension to give families more certainty and protect these investments from future cuts, we are very glad that progressives fought back against short-sighted and misguided attempts to eliminate, water down, or make it more onerous for families to receive this critical lifeline.

“These past few months of the expanded child tax credit have been an overwhelming success and a strong demonstration that economic policy works best when it works for all families, not just the ultra-wealthy and well-connected. Children and families were pulled out of poverty. More workers were able to afford child care and get back on the job. And the fragile economic recovery was given a critically-needed boost as families had more money in their pockets to spend at local businesses.

“What we’ve seen in our polling is that the more people learn about the expanded child tax credit, the more they support it and the politicians who help deliver it. While we are disappointed that Congress only extended this policy for another year, we will continue to push for a permanent extension next year.”
