Vocal Support from Moderates, Swing District Members for Extending the Expanded Child Tax Credit

This week the fight to make the President’s expanded Child Tax Credit permanent took center stage in infrastructure negotiations — and is more important to secure than ever.

As the country continues to recover from the devastating economic impacts of COVID-19, President Biden’s Child Tax Credit is putting money into the pockets of millions of families and has been a huge boost for local economies across the country. The Census Bureau’s latest July Jobs Report showed the Child Tax Credit had a “big impact” on job growth and a new economic analysis from the Niskanen Center shows an expanded credit will result in $27.6 billion in additional spending, provide support for more than 500,000 new jobs, and produce an estimated $1.9 billion in revenue for local governments.

With businesses booming from this expanded credit — and recent polling showing that a majority of voters support extending the expanded credit — it’s no wonder that Members of Congress across the political spectrum do as well.

Below is a sampling of policymakers expressing support for the expanded Child Tax Credit:

Sen. Sinema Supports Expanding The Child Tax Credit:

“Family-friendly tax credits such as the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit should also be expanded to help households in need. Arizonans are facing financial challenges in the workplace and at home, and the next package must address both” [Sinema Letter, 7/20/20]

Rep. Cuellar (TX-28) Pledges To Make The Child Tax Credit Permanent:

“The Child Tax Credit will help working families that faced incredible hardship throughout this pandemic. As a border member, my district was particularly impacted by the economic restrictions implemented at the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Families in Texas’s 28th District need relief and I am hopeful these refunds will provide immediate assistance. “The expanded CTC reduces tedious paperwork and filing barriers that often discourage families from seeking aid. I hope Americans will see how crucial these payments are, and that Congress can come together to make these payments permanent.” [Cuellar Press Release, 7/15/21]

Rep. Costa (CA-16) Pledges To Make The Child Tax Credit Permanent:

“Help is here for working and low-income families with kids. The American Rescue Plan expanded the child tax credit to help families make ends meet. President Biden’s American Families Plan calls for extending this tax relief for years and years. I pledge my support to work with Congress to make this a permanent benefit.”  [Costa’s House Website]

Sen. King Supports the Child Tax Credit:

“The [American Rescue Plan] also addresses longstanding inequalities exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic by adjusting the Child Tax Credit to help lift 10,000 Maine children out of poverty and investing key resources into broadband expansion, which is essential to remote learning, telehealth for seniors, and working from home – all crucial in our fight against the impacts of the pandemic.” [Angus King Press Release, 3/6/21]

Sen. Manchin Supports the Child Tax Credit:

“The relief package also provides support for West Virginians who lost their jobs through no fault of their own by extending unemployment benefits, helps support West Virginia families through the child tax credits and assists West Virginians through other forms of direct aid.” [Manchin Press Release, 5/13/21]

Rep. Gonzalez (TX-15) Announced The Beginning Of Child Tax Credit Payments:

“I proudly voted for the American Rescue Plan Act which expanded Child Tax Credit Monthly Payments to put more money in the pockets of hardworking parents and lift up children and families in Central and South Texas. “These payments will help families most impacted by the pandemic pay for child care, keep the lights on and food on the table. I am proud to support working families and will continue to fight for them in Congress.” [Gonzalez Press Release, 7/15/21]
