One-Year Child Tax Credit Extension “Woefully Inadequate,” Uncertainty Would Hurt Families and Economy

New Poll: 59% of voters support the expanded CTC, 77% of recipients support permanent extension

Washington, DC – Today, Fighting Chance for Families spokesperson McKenzie Wilson released the following statement in response to reports that President Biden and lawmakers are considering only extending the expanded Child Tax Credit for one year. The campaign also released new polling showing that a majority of voters support the permanent extension of the program, and the overwhelming majority of recipients support the program and its extension.

“A woefully inadequate one-year extension would lead to uncertainty for millions of families, put the expanded Child Tax Credit at risk of being eliminated far too soon, and threaten this fragile economic recovery. It would also be a  massive missed opportunity to lock in one of this Administration’s greatest economic success stories as a pillar of America’s commitment to children and families.

“The expanded Child Tax Credit is popular, good for the economy, and a key element of President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda. There is absolutely no reason for Congress to consider anything but a long-term extension of the policy.

“This should be a no-brainer: putting money in the pockets of those who need it most is good for the children and families receiving it, good for local businesses, and helps protect this fragile economic recovery. Members of Congress who have been fighting for this critical policy should stand strong and reject any attempt to allow the Child Tax Credit to be eliminated next year.”
